A recent survey carried out by viagra connect in the Uk found that an unsurprising 66% of us think that having a good, healthy sex life is important to maintaining a romantic relationship. but often-ignored issues like bladder weakness, vaginal dryness and body confidence can put a hold on fun between the sheets. our experts are here to dispel your worries…
Q I know this sounds silly, but can I get pregnant even if I’ve been through menopause? My friend says you can still conceive for a year or two after your periods stop. Is she right?
A Dr Louise Newson, a GP with a special interest in menopause, says, ‘Yes, it’s generally suggested that women over 50 should use contraception for a year following their last period, while those under 50 should use contraception for two years after their last period.’
Q I’m really battling with vaginal dryness and it’s making sex very painful. What can I do?
A Dr Newson says, ‘This is fairly common, yet most women are too embarrassed to talk about it. It usually happens due to lower oestrogen levels that occur as we get older – and particularly after women go through menopause – resulting in the lining of the vagina becoming thinner, less elastic and less lubricated. A vaginal moisturiser can help, and oestrogen in pessaries, cream or a vaginal ring can be effective. Use regularly and long term, otherwise symptoms will recur.’
Q Is erectile dysfunction an early warning when it comes to impending heart problems?
