I’m expecting Kayla Itsines to be every bit as lacklustre and sleep-deprived as I am today. I spent last night scouring the streets for my runaway husky, so right now I’m being powered by sheer adrenaline. Knowing she has two dogs of the same breed, in addition to a eight-month-old baby girl, I’m preparing to bond over exhaustion. But when I share my nocturnal adventures, she laughs heartily and, with not a trace of fatigue in her voice, says, “I’m not tired at all, but boy, I know how you feel! Ace ran away the other day. He was gone for hours, but then he just trotted down the driveway as though nothing was amiss.”
“Typical huskies,” we lament, agreeing this wolflike breed is not for the faint-hearted. Of course, Itsines is anything but unassertive. Her traits, also deeply inherent in the Arctic breed we both adore, include strength, determination, ambition, drive and unbridled motivation. Another admirable trait: she can cleverly capitalise on any opportunity for advancement or adventure.
