A new book celebrates Annie Leibovitz’s 50-year career
When it comes to contemporary portraits, Annie Leibovitz is the queen. She’s even photographed the royal matriarch – just one of the instantly iconic images that appear in her latest portfolio: Annie Leibovitz at Work (Phaidon, $79.95). The acclaimed photographer, 69, reveals the inner workings of her practice, narrating the story of her incredible working life. It’s a roll call of legends, starting with Richard Nixon’s resignation, a story she covered with Hunter S. Thompson, and ending with Barack Obama’s campaign. In between is a 1975 Rolling Stones tour (“the thing that saved me was that I had a camera by my side”), the Vanity Fair milestones – including Whoopi Goldberg in the milk bath and pregnant Demi Moore (“it broke ground but I don’t think it’s a good photo”) – plus John Lennon, Yoko Ono and Kate Moss. “I’m interested in getting something unpredictable,” Leibovitz says. “Even so, when the picture starts to happen, it’s often a surprise.”
