As the surf-rock quartet The Atomics, the Smith siblings serve up retro-inspired tunes. Offstage, they’re models with a taste for fashion. On today’s menu: ’60s-flavored cool.

What was it like growing up with three older sisters?

It was like I had four moms—my sisters just wanted to take care of me. But it was the other way around as well. I was super-protective of them. Sometimes they come to me for guy advice but not often.

What’s the best advice they’ve ever given you?

Do what makes you happy.

When did you fall in love with music?

I was, like, 6 years old when I got my first drum set—we each got instruments for Christmas. My dad taught me how to play. It was fun because I had so much energy as a little kid.

Which artists do you like listening to?

The Black Keys, James Brown, and old-school hip-hop, like Slick Rick.

The Atomics performed at Coachella. Do you get preshow jitters?

I really don’t. Playing shows and stuff—I can play. The other people there, they’re just fun.

Any confidence tips?

Don’t listen to what people have to say about you. Just do you.

Other than working on music for the band’s upcoming EP, what else are you up to?

Focusing on myself and film stuff.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Go to the beach, have bonfires, and kick back. I think about nothing but chilling and eating burgers, hot dogs, and chips.

What made you start playing the guitar?

When we all got instruments, I actually got a bass guitar and Pyper got the guitar. On the songs we were learning, I’d play only two notes, so I’d complain it was boring. Pyper said, “Let’s switch.”
