Peak Performance

Planning to scale a mountain anytime soon? TRUE LOVE has some great advice to get you into tip-top shape.

Peak Performance

The ultimate outdoor activity that any active person aspires to is scaling a mountain. Mountain climbing has many benefits, including keeping you in shape, toning muscles, building strength and stamina, helping you to lose weight, reducing blood pressure and blood sugar levels – and it’s a great bonding exercise for those involved. However, you must be in tip-top shape to be able to cover the distance.

Why should I train?

Because physical training will make you strong and prevent you from collapsing or passing out in the process of mountain climbing. Yes, it’s that strenuous!

When should I start?

It is never too early to start training. In an ideal situation, aspiring mountain climbers should be training year round, but factors like jobs, family or lack of motivation get in the way. Still, if you’re planning to climb a mountain six months from now, start training NOW. This sport requires a lot of strength since you will not only be moving your own body, but also that large back pack on your back – and you’ll be moving vertically.

What fun things can I do to get me started?

Start with a climb: The best exercise to get into the climbing mode is to simply climb. Since you cannot climb mountains regularly, try doing physical challenges that you would encounter when mountain climbing.

Go on a hike: Carry a back pack and go hiking for a few hours. If you cannot find a suitable hiking place or the weather does not permit, then run or hike up a long set of stairs. Gradually increase the laps and the weight in the pack as you continue while you decrease the time taken.

Go mountain biking: Instead of riding on flat terrain, look for rough terrain. This is great aerobic, cardio and muscular training – but do wear a helmet for safety.
