Understandability the airline sector was one of the most vulnerable to both the impact of the pandemic and the various lockdown restrictions designed to combat the spreading of the virus. Passenger numbers and revenues plummeted, with some airlines forced to mothball their operations for several months even years. Africa's largest carriers responded in different ways, whilst there is a growing feeling that the crisis has speeded up ongoing developments in the industry At the same time struggling airlines were forced to take desperate measures and the few success stories have become increasingly dominant.
AFRICAN CARRIERS SEE SLOW PACE OF RECOVERY IN FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced its latest outlook for airline industry financial performance showing improved results amid the continuing pandemic. African airlines experienced a 69.5% rise in August RPKs versus a year ago. August 2022 capacity was up 45.3% and load factor climbed 10.8 percentage points to 75.9%, the lowest among regions. International traffic between Africa and neighbouring regions is close to pre-pandemic levels. African airlines saw cargo volumes increase by 1.0% in August 2022 compared to August 2021. This was a significant improvement on growth recorded the previous month (-3.5%). Capacity was 1.4% below August 2021 levels.
The African Airlines Association (AFRAA) in partnership with the leading African marketing intelligence provider, Milanamos has launched a dedicated Aviation Route Intelligence Portal. The data-backed portal is a gateway to airlines to access useful market insights on networks within Africa and routes from Africa to the rest of the world.

Maputo airshow 2024 What a treat!
On Sunday 16 June Christine and I returned from attending the Maputo airshow and what a fantastic experience this was not only for estimated 15 000 spectators, but also the members of the media present. As always Brian Emmenis and his team were on top form with a great selection of music. The grand finale with the Puma Energy Flying Lions T6 Harvards was simply beautiful and I saw several spectators with tears in their eyes as they expressed their happiness for the airshow.
