Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood glucose, commonly called blood sugar. Glucose is vital to your health because it's an important source of energy for the cells that make up your muscles and tissues. It's also your brain's main source of fuel. If you have Diabetes, no matter what type, it means you have too much glucose in your blood and this, in turn, can lead to serious health problems.
Most people face uncertainty after they are diagnosed with Diabetes. The hard part is accepting and coming to terms with the diagnosis as it is a life-long disease. One essential fact about Diabetes is that it can be managed with medication and even reversed with lifestyle changes, but it cannot be cured. It is important to know the facts about Diabetes to manage it effectively. This goes a long way in lessening its hold on your well-being and the quality of your life.
We receive well-meaning advice in the form of explanations derived from personal opinions to a whole plethora of suggestions based on anecdotal experiences is often offered by family and friends. But it is of utmost importance to consult an endocrinologist or a diabetologist to manage blood sugar levels. Regular diet and physiotherapy consultations are also necessary to improve the quality of life. An immediate start to treatment after diagnosis proves beneficial. Early blood sugar control reduces the complications of the eyes, kidneys, heart, and feet which affect people with Diabetes in the short and long term.
