DIGITALISM
Probing the impact of new media on traditional image making, Michael Staniak’s Oxide painting 097 fuses textural and printed elements to confound the viewer’s depth perception, dissolving distinctions between digital and painterly processes. The artist’s new series follows a recent residency in Newfoundland, where he observed the effect of extreme climes on human behavior. Until August 3. stationgallery.com.au

A FINE BALANCE
Luke Storrier’s new series began with a trip to Wilcannia, accompanied only by his dog Ace (both pictured left), where the artist was moved by the isolated, arid landscape, as well as the drought’s visible toll on local fauna. Returning to his studio, Luke channeled images of his remote residency – of Mars-like plains at dusk and makeshift burial sites for kangaroos – avoiding overwrought mimicry in favor of an intuitive process that would preserve the vitality of a work still in progress. Titled ‘Fine Line’ in reference to this tension between resolving a piece and pushing it too far, Luke’s suite of sculptures and paintings overlaid with sculptural elements are animated by the experimentation of his studio practice and the elemental aura of found and manipulated materials.
