I enjoyed watching my mum knit, crochet and sew when I was growing up in Renfrewshire, but my fixation on things being ‘right’ and having ‘meaning’ meant I would start things and rarely finish them. Design for me was choosing paint colour cards from B&Q and fantasising about redecorating ordinary homes. I can remember the excitement of getting home from Brownies on a Wednesday night when I was eight to watch Grand Designs. My grandfather had studied fine art at Glasgow School of Art in the 1930s, so the notion of going to art school seemed exciting.

I have learned that knitting demands a constant balance between artistry and engineering. Creating a new textile involves not only selecting colours and yarns but also considering the tensile strength, elasticity and drape of the material. That way, I ensure the final product is both aesthetically pleasing and functional. To me, this blend of creativity and technical precision is a fascinating aspect of knitted textile design.
