Dhananjay Shinde Design Studio, an award-winning firm based in Nashik, restored a structure that was unused and in a dilapidated state for the past decade. The structure dates back to the 1920’s. It was a boarding school for Maratha Vidya Prasarak, one of the oldest and largest private education institutes of Maharashtra. The span of time and rough use had taken its toll on the structure. The management wanted to enhance the restoration with an efficient design team. A meaningful intervention was planned with an approach towards preserving the history and reviving the heritage.
The expertise of Ar. Dhananjay Shinde and his team lies in creating environments which enrich clients’ lives and adds a meaningful experience to it. The restoration of the old building and existing site has been seamlessly integrated with a new design, moulded by a meaningful intervention.
Describing the client brief, Ar. Dhananjay says, “The general perception given to us was to demolish the structure and construct a new building. The educational institute’s secretary had the vision to preserve the old building. After a lot of brainstorming, we took a collaborative decision of restoring the old heritage structure. The design process started with developing a kindergarten and an educational museum by following the same architectural language. Along with creating a landmark for the city, the aim was to create a public space, that people from all walks of life could visit to celebrate our heritage.”
Architectural parameters
Originally, if one observes the space, two individual ‘C’ shaped buildings existed on the site, divided by a road leading to the workshop area beyond. The buildings were fragmented and the architects provided an alternative road to the workshop. “We managed to cordon the entire area between two structures by introducing walls on the North and South faces. A huge pedestrian plaza is thus created, highlighted by an amphitheater in the centre and garden areas on the sides. Thus, a nice public space is created,” says the design team.
