Designed by Ar. Tushar Kothawade and Ar. Chiranjivi Lunkad of Studio Infinity, ‘The Outdoor Classroom’, provides pre-primary children a safe haven away from the comforts of home, to explore, learn, and grow, while challenging the conventional ‘boxed’ classroom and reflecting the changing face of contemporary education.
‘The Outdoor Classroom’, the atypical project name itself reflects a paradox. Conventionally bound in boxes, this school opens education to the sky as well, a change which one may well consider inevitable in today’s world. Commissioned by clients who have two similar projects, ‘The Outdoor Classroom’ is a pre-primary school for about 80-100 students.
Housed in a site averse to the idea of ‘The Outdoor Classroom’, the design involved overcoming several challenges architecturally. The site, with its low headroom, spread over an area of 3000 sq.ft., distributed over three floors, was a commercial building adjacent to a large residential colony. The challenge of having just half the space roofed was strategically overcome by extending the classroom outdoors, to create open, activity-based learning spaces, which is what contemporary education is slowly turning towards.
