‘Pergolas can serve multiple functions in a garden; they can provide shade where previously none existed, and help to break up the space inside a garden making it more dynamic and interesting,’ says garden designer Matthew Wilson. ‘They provide a support system that enables climbing plants to be grown. I love to use star jasmine as the anchor plant, as it’s evergreen and highly fragrant. To that I would add climbing roses and clematis and for fast coverage the Chilean potato vine (Solanum crispum ‘Glasnevin’), is great.’
