1 CLAREMONT LANDSCAPE GARDEN
Portsmouth Road, Esher. KT10 9JG Tel: 03448001895 Web: nationaltrust. org.uk/claremont-landscape-garden
November is a special month at Claremont as it marks the death of “The Forgotten Daughter of England” – Princess Charlotte, who lived here in the early 19th century. Princess Charlotte Augusta loved the gardens and spent many happy days at Claremont. Her largely unknown story and how it affected the outcome of the British Monarchy is fascinating – her untimely death marking a period of great uncertainty in the dynasty of the Royals.
To mark this anniversary the trust has built a fabulous replica of what was to be a tea room for her, but which ultimately became her mausoleum. Do have a wander up to the top of the amphitheatre where you can see the building and get a wonderful view across the lake.
2 SANDOWN PARK RACECOURSE
Portsmouth Road, Esher. KT10 9AJ 01372 464348 Web: sandown.thejockeyclub.co.uk/
This month (November) sees the return of jump racing to Sandown with the Jump Season Opener on November 12. First race at 12.30 with horses and riders competing over the famous Sandown railway fences. Loads more on the day too, with folk music, local beers and, if you’re into the real country set, visit the Think Tweed stands, where you can try on the latest styles. If you’re new to having a flutter on the nags, there are loads on the website to help you and explain how easy it is to lose your shirt (ok, you MIGHT win…) and where to go on the day. Our bet is you’ll have a great day out! If you need more help on what to wear, turn to our fashion feature, shot at the course, on page 124.
