A Romantic Liaison

Founder of the Wildlife Aid Foundation, Simon Cowell MBE, reports on another month of memorable rescues - and calls for volunteers to help his team.

A Romantic Liaison

IN the spirit of Valentine’s Day I thought I’d start with a romantic anecdote about one of my most memorable ‘emergency calls’. It happened several years ago, when an elderly lady caller contacted the centre and explained that someone had cruelly glued two foxes together and that they were making an awful racket in her garden.

When she described how they were attached tail end to tail end I gently had to explain to her that they were not in distress but were caught in a passionate embrace and that, after 10 minutes or so, nature would take its course and they would naturally disengage. I told her that in the not-too-distant future she may well see fox cubs frolicking on her lawn. As the penny dropped I could almost feel her face redden over the phone.
