Happy Anniversary

This month Leigh Clapp visits a bountiful small garden in Banstead that billows with colour and interest, incorporating an array of interesting plants with bio-diversity for wildlife

IN 2012, Jennifer Russell gave herself a very special present to celebrate 30 years of marriage to husband Bob by creating a garden at their home at 53 Commonfield Road, Banstead, which incorporates her passion for interesting plants and nature.

“I intended to get in a garden designer but she asked me for a brief and when she came round to discuss it she said, ‘you don’t need me, you’ve already designed it’,” explains keen gardener Jennifer.

Indeed, there was a comprehensive list of requirements to transform a rather blank canvas of grass, some trees and shrubs into a haven for both the family and wildlife.

“I wanted a wildflower area, a pond with marginal plants and a bog garden, plants to attract insects, birds, and in particular bees and butterflies. Shrubs and small trees would give balance, while I also wanted a children’s play area, potting shed, and cold frame. Plants had to give long seasonal interest. Seating areas would be incorporated, while practical considerations included having water, and electricity to the end of garden and a washing line area. I knew I wanted natural surfaces, not stone slabs and I like quirky sculptures by upcycling and recycling odd things,” says Jennifer.
