Soak in the Grandeur of a bygone era in parktown
The old mansions of Parktown in Johannesburg are monuments to a time and a lifestyle that is hard to even comprehend today, with our townhouse existence and rat-race mentality. They hark back to a grandeur, elegance and opulence that marked the beginning of Johannesburg’s reign as one of the world’s great cities.
Moot House is one of these great mansions, built in 1906 for Richard Feetham, an Oxford graduate brought to Johannesburg to lend his mind to the reconstruction of the Transvaal after the Anglo-Boer War. He was part of the group known as Milner’s Kindergarten, who met at Moot House and there actually drafted the Selbourne Memorandum, which would later become the Union of South Africa.
History aside, this Herbert Baker-designed home is well worth visiting as much for the spectacular garden as for any element of the heralded architecture. Renovated in 2010, the garden is an elegant example of how an established, period garden can be brought in line with modern trends without losing its historic aura.
