With the widespread awareness campaigns and policies encouraging people to switch to sustainable alternatives, certain brands have started a new era of developing sustainability into a reform

Differniture follows a sustainable approach in its design process be it in the form of sourcing reclaimed or salvaged materials, looking out for trees that fall in storms as well as applying non toxic oils and waxes on their finished goods. Their Tesselate collection, where small geometric pieces are replicated over and over from the left over scraps of past products and turned into more complex designs, eliminates the waste and results in an intricate display of geometry and wood grain.

Cane Boutique as their name suggests specialises in cane and wicker furniture, which is the most sustainable material derived from bamboo found in limited locations. This plant grows three times faster than wood and requires minimum water. They use the raw material to replace wood in many pieces, which helps to preserve the forests. Cane is a long lasting and strong material, but because it’s made of natural fibres they degrade well when discarded, saving space in our landfills.

Marjan van Aubel, is an award-winning solar designer, whose innovative practice spans the fields of sustainability, design and technology. In collaboration with scientists, engineers and institutions such as Swarovski and ECN.TNO, the Dutch Energy Centre, van Aubel works to promote extreme energy efficiency through intelligent design. From working with expandable materials, to domestically integrating solar cells that mimic the process of photosynthesis in plants, she adds a double function to objects and puts them to work.
