We’ve all read the stories of passionate, hymen-tearing sex that results in blood-stained sheets. While this is possible, it’s not everyone’s experience. Not everyone even has a hymen, and sometimes, it can tear during sports or other physical activities long before you’re even sexually active.

The presence of blood is another myth, or at least the gushing-all-over-the-sheets part. There isn’t necessarily blood the first time you have sex, and if there is, it’s not always a lot. The blood can come from the hymen breaking, or the tissue inside your vulva tearing if you’re not aroused or lubricated enough.

Pain expectations
