MOMENTUM can play a huge part in attaining success in modern football, and Callum McGregor believes that his strong start to the season can be attributed to his ability to maintain the kind of confidence which saw him end the treble-winning Invincibles’ campaign on such a high and earn his first cap for Scotland earlier this month.

The Hoops midfielder has scored seven goals across all competitions so far this season, equalling his total goal tally for the whole of last season. And with many more games left in the current campaign, McGregor is confident he will far exceed that total as he continues to show the improvements he is making with each passing week.

“I got off the mark early this season,” said McGregor in an exclusive interview with the Celtic View. “I felt that towards the end of last season I was contributing in the big games, and I started to see how I could be a main player in the team and score goals. I picked up a bit of momentum and scored four of my goals in the last four or five weeks of the season.

“A big part of that was probably down to confidence. I felt as if I was growing as a player, and scoring goals helped me realise that. When that’s happening you feel like you’re on a good run and it plays a part in how you perform in each game.

“Having played in a number of different positions helps with that. When you look at the goals I’ve scored this season, they’ve been from all over the pitch in terms of different finishes and coming from different areas.”

McGregor’s seven goals and 11 assists last season surpassed the six goals and eight assists he contributed in the previous campaign. The fact that four of his goals came in the last four weeks of the season is no coincidence either. The 24-year-old has an unshakable determination to improve each year.
