Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai is godmother to Celebrity Cruises’ revolutionary new ship that could transform the cruise industry.
When I was a child, my father built a dinghy out of driftwood, sturdy enough for my dog and me to stay afloat on the lake that fringed our tea estate—until we outweighed the vessel. Even though our Durrell-esque adventures were short-lived, I’d had my first taste of the serenity and thrill of being afloat. And I was, well, hooked, line and sinker.
Since then, I’ve been on countless ships, catamarans, yachts, canoes, skiffs, even a double-outrigger on the Indian Ocean. But had I been on a cruise ship? Never. I couldn’t think of anything more straight-laced than being trapped on a floating mega hotel. So, when I arrived in Florida to board Celebrity Cruises’ new 1,467-room ship, the Edge, for a two-day sailing trip to the Bahamas, I couldn’t wait to get it over and done with. Little did I know what I was in for.
