Whether It ’S Walking The Red Carpet Or Walking Her Daughter To School , Pearl Thusi L Ikes To Keep Things Real . She Gets Frank With Cosmo About Money, Fame And Building A Better Future
WHEN PEARL THUSI walks into the studio, we know that this won’t be like any other COSMO cover shoot. There are no outrageously expensive gowns on our fashion director’s rail for Pearl to choose from. Instead, we’ve scoured the best of the high street and a selection of dresses crafted from recycled materials. Why? Because July is National Savings Month and this year Pearl is working with Sanlam on a social experiment to show South Africans that you can live a glamorous life without going broke. What better way to prove it than to appear on the cover of an international magazine in a dress that cost less than R250?
Pearl is adamant that she’s here to set a good example when it comes to spending money. ‘I know that celebrities often depict a lifestyle no-one can live up to,’ she says. ‘It’s good and bad in equal measure. It’s good because it’s aspirational but bad because it drives people into debt as they try to achieve it before they’re financially able to.
It’s scary to see that most young girls, when asked about what they want to be when they grow up, will give the answer “famous”. Fame is a by-product of doing something well, and there are no short cuts to the hard work and sacrifice that goes into that.’
