During the monsoon, India’s rivers swell into gushing torrents that descend in thundering waterfalls. These roaring streams of water are among the best sights of our splendid rainy season.

The Narmada river's plunge at Dhuandhar has such force that the mist generated leads to a constant cloud.

Every year, when the scorching heat of summer finally gives way to the bliss of the monsoon and the parched earth is drenched by the seasonal rain, the landscape turns clean, fresh and green, and the beauty of nature abounds. Rivers acquire new life and flow with abandon, sometimes swelling beyond their banks and flooding valleys. And as they rush headlong along their courses, they often cascade as thundering waterfalls with magnificent fury—providing one of the best sights of the monsoon. India’s vast network of rivers leads to an abundance of waterfalls. Many are known and prized, but several more are unknown, hidden in remote locations and difficult to access. Here are some of the most spectacular ones across the country which should be on every traveller’s must-see list.

COURTALLAM TAMIL NADU

Almost at the southern end of the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu, perched some 1,200 feet above sea level, is the tiny town (more a large village, actually) of Courtallam or Kutraalam, as it is known locally. Hills dot the landscape and give rise to the profusion of waterfalls in and around the town. The hills also have an abundance of medicinal herbs and spice trees and hence the water of the many falls is believed to possess healing properties, which is what draws locals and tourists to bathe in them. There are nearly a dozen or so in the region, with five being easily accessible and popular. The biggest and most splendid is right in the centre of town, behind the main bus terminus. Called Main Falls, it is associated with a large Shiva temple adjacent to it Also striking is Five Falls, just outside town and so named because the torrent splits into five streams. There are also Old Falls, Tiger Falls and Small Falls.
