What is VES, and how does it affect the cost of buying a car and rental prices?
The Vehicle Emissions Scheme (VES) replaced the previous Carbon EmissionsBased Vehicle Scheme (CEVS) and took effect from the start of January 2018. The new scheme was introduced to encourage car buyers to choose models that are more eco-friendly. In July this year, particulate matter (PM) was added to the existing four pollutants that are assessed – carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). The rebate you receive or the surcharge you must pay on the vehicle you purchase is determined by the worst-performing pollutant.
