Divorce affects many expats living in Singapore, and it seems that its ramifications are becoming more and more complicated. Yet one thing hasn’t changed: children’s interests remain of paramount importance. Thankfully, imminent changes will improve outcomes for children in high-conflict cases.
Last November, news that a Belgian national living in Singapore was accused of murdering his son made headlines across the globe. The man was reportedly fighting with his former spouse for custody of the child. Ostensibly, father and son had enjoyed a loving relationship, and there was little sign of what was to come.
Custody undoubtedly remains the top priority for most parents when a marriage breaks down. The issue becomes more complex for expatriate couples who are here for a short period of time. Some parents wish to return to their home country with their children after the divorce, while others wish to stay.
