In The Hot Seat!
EL Singapore|August 2016

We put three furniture retailers in the hot seat and ask what makes them tick.

In The Hot Seat!

Tell us about your business, in a nutshell.

It’s a place where your personality matches with our furniture. We believe every home and its interior says something about the person living in it. With our range of furniture, you are able to find the right pieces and the soft furnishings to help you accomplish the vision you set out for your home – whether you’re leasing or buying your furniture, we can complete your home. Our custom-made offerings and 25 years of service complete the experience.

Where does your passion for furniture stem from?

My mother. Her sense of detail, her insistence on the merits of hard work and her love for people instilled this passion. She also taught me about the beautiful things, experiences and people in my life. Inheriting these qualities has been the genesis of the path I have undertaken to live and fulfil each day.

Which one piece of furniture have you sourced that you were loath to sell because you really wanted it yourself?

My very first piece, offered to me by a 75-year-old man. It was a 1920s Peranakan sideboard – his part of the “his and hers” set given as dowry at the time of his wedding in Penang. It was sold to a German lady who had a house built round this piece, so it really went to someone who would love it.

If your company were an animal, what would it be and why?

It would be my fourth child – the one my children tease me about, saying that I love her more than them because I spend a lot more time with her!

What advice would you give yourself if you were starting out again?

What goes around comes around; the world is small; work with passion and learn compassion.

Name one place in Singapore where you go to feel inspired.
