We examine what this will this mean, for Gay UK and the wider world.
On June 23rd, the UK staged an historic referendum on whether the UK should remain or leave the European Union and in a big surprise, the UK voted to leave the European Union by 52% to 48%. with a voter turnout of almost 72% (over 30 million people). The campaign leading up to the referendum was highly emotive and in the opinions of many characterized by an appalling lack of factual information, but as the new UK Prime Minister has stated, ‘Brexit means Brexit’.
But what does Brexit mean?
At this point, no one really knows. What we do know is that the UK is on an unprecedented course with significant complexity in just determining what this all means. And of course, there is nothing like uncertainty to upset financial markets which can affect everyone’s savings, investments and retirement plans. In the early days following the referendum, this was further exasperated by political chaos resulting in a new leadership team. In the couple of months since the referendum, we have seen some stability return in the UK and other than a significant fall in the UK Pound, we have seen markets back in positive territory. There is still significant concern about the future of the UK economy outside the EU and the knock on effect that could have on the rest of Europe and indeed across the Globe.
