DOL-DOP Bakers and Confectioners has served the people of Guwahati for more than 45 years
A Slice of History

Guwahati, the gateway to Northeast India, was declared as the capital of Assam back in 1972. Thereafter, it transformed steadily. With time, the periphery of the city amplified and evolved with time. Small shops were replaced by malls, flyovers popped up as alternatives to busy narrow roads, and one-screen movie theatre were replaced by multiplexes. But there are some old shops/eateries, once very popular among the city folk, that have continued to be part of the city’s changing landscape. DOL-DOP Bakers and Confectioners in Ganeshguri is one such establishment.

Established in 1973, it is one of the oldest bakeries in Ganeshguri. DOL DOP first started out as a restaurant and switched to a bakery in 1979. Like many other bakeries, DOL DOP offers the classic baked items like biscuits, bread, flaky pastry, along with an array of sweetmeats. Although the bakery has managed to survive all these years, it hasn’t been easy for the proprietor, Ranjit Kumar Hazarika. It is thanks to his dedication and patience that the bakery continues to serve the people of the city. ‘I am satisfied with the reasonable income that I make from my bakery, and I don’t feel like expanding my business. As I am the only one taking care of all things from production, finance, to administration, I haven’t had time to give the bakery a makeover.’

MUSINGS OF A SOLDIER: TIT-BITS

People often ask me about my life out of uniform. Honestly, I have had no problems. Not so far. Instead, I find it quite refreshing. No routine, no parades, no briefing, no impending operations. Having donned the uniform since the age of thirteen until I hung up my boots last year, could I ever visualize life out of uniform? Not really. But, as I said, the transition has been quite smooth–no hang-overs, no regrets. People have been very positive in their interactions. Government departments have been responsive whenever I have approached for assistance. The genuine respect for the uniform is quite evident and it makes my heart swell with pride. Arunachal, to that extent, is the most nationalistic state in the country, I daresay. It has been kind of a revelation for me to experience the freedom of being a common man in an environment of positivity!
