Riding The Himalayas
Expat Living Singapore|January 2024
One of the more memorable travel experiences for EL contributor NAZMI YAZID was riding a Royal Enfield motorcycle in the Indian section of the Himalayas. Here he shares some tips on how to transform a two-legged vacation in the highlands into a two-wheeled adventure!
Riding The Himalayas

Manali is a town in the Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh, India, and an absolute landscape beauty thanks to its location in the Western Himalayas. And what better way to explore the region than on a high-altitude motorcycle ride around snow-capped mountains? The location of Manali makes it ideal for those who wish to discover surrounding areas like the Rohtang Pass and Solang Valley while still having the convenience of daily amenities.

A rider's heaven

Manali is among India's most popular destinations for motorcycle riders. The best time to visit is during summer when the nights don't dip to sub-zero and you can dine outdoors in one of the many roadside restaurants (dhabas) around town. But just ensure you're well-prepared for sitting in heavy traffic on your way home, as it's busy with travellers.

Where to stay in Manali

Accommodation is in abundance throughout town. From luxurious five-star mountain resorts to local guesthouses to budget backpacker hostels, youʼll be spoilt for choice of rooms offering breathtaking views of the highlands. Options include:

• The Windflower Resort

• Hotel Himalayan Heights

• Backpacker Panda (pictured)

Renting a Royal Enfield bike

Royal Enfield is a legendary motorcycle brand that has been a part of Indiaʼs automotive landscape since the 1950s. The company initially started as a subsidiary of a British firm, and soon became popular among Indian motorcyclists for its ruggedness, reliability and powerful engine.
