Things are about to get wild with Jungle in the house
Back in 2014, you might remember being introduced to a mysterious band called Jungle and their funk-soul dream pop pickled-in-nostalgia sound at parties, where the crowds debated Pitchfork reviews and drank gallons of artisanal beer. Or perhaps YouTube’s carousel offered up that magnetic video of “The Heat”, featuring British skating duo High Rollaz wheelin’ and dealin’ in perfect sync to that sober-Bee Gees-like mood. And then, maybe, you realised it wasn’t you; and that Jungle were, in fact, turning up everywhere you looked: on charts, shortlists, even ad soundtracks.
A Gold record status and a Mercury Prize nomination later, Tom McFarland and Josh Lloyd Watson revealed themselves as the architects of this music collective that was more about the “feels” than anything else. Late in 2018, they dropped a pretty great sophomore album, For Ever, more “real” than their first, but just as danceable. The secret code, McFarland tells us enigmatically: “Truth, emotion and unique sounds.”
