Germany is rich in history yet mesmerising in its embrace of the new. From Munich to Oberammergau, Eena Houzyama learns about the stories behind each destination.
After watching numerous documentaries on Germany, and hearing the stories of friends who’ve traveled there, I was eager to experience this truly historical country for myself. Although a dark past hangs over it like a lingering grey cloud, times have changed and I wanted to learn more about its culture and food. So when the opportunity came for me to hop on a plane to Germany, I knew I couldn’t turn down such a great invitation from Trafalgar.
MEETING MUNICH
Arriving in Munich on a chilly autumn morning, I was excited to explore the city. But first, we checked in at the hotel to freshen up. Despite it being a gloomy evening, we met up with our local guide at the Odeon Platz, right in front of the Theatine Church. According to her, this Baroque-styled church was built during 1663 to 1690 by Elector Ferdinand Maria for his wife, Henriette Adelaide of Savoy, to thank her for the birth of their heir, Prince Max Emanuel, in 1662.
The skies grew dark quite early as we weaved in and out of different stores, learning about their beginnings. Still, we made a quick stop at the legendary Cafe Luitpold, which also houses the smallest museum in Munich. Tucked upstairs behind the main café, this museum gave us an insight as to how the café became such an international hotspot. If you have time to stop by and grab a seat, don’t forget to try the infamous Prinzregententorte – a Bavarian torte made with layers of sponge cake and buttercream. It’s said to be the must-try cake in this region.
