No one deserves this recognition more than Oprah Winfrey, who combines philanthropy and activism with the entertainment empire she built on a foundation of hope and hard work.
When she stood on stage at the Golden Globes in January, proclaiming “a new day has come”, Oprah Winfrey became the leading charge for the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, and a contender for the 2020 US presidential election, which the icon has repeatedly rubbished, claiming she's “not built for a career in Washington”.
That doesn't mean the talk-show goddess can't still dish out her trademark wisdom when it comes to the seismic shifts within Hollywood and around the globe. And when Oprah talks, you listen. "It is a significant moment in history for all of us," she uttered in that rich tone of hers. "Society, as an entity, will never be the same again, and will never revert to how it was. It can’t, and it won't."
It's a surreal experience sitting in front of the legend. Surreal in that it quickly becomes far from surreal. She has the overpowering, unique gift of putting those around her completely at ease – exactly why she conquered US day-time television, reigning supreme for over 30 years.
Today, she's glamorously regal in a gold duffel, mac-style gown, with her hair slicked back in a high pony and her two-tone specs slightly obscuring her features. Despite a lengthy tour promoting A Wrinkle in Time, Oprah, 64, is energetic and enthusiastic. She wildly gesticulates, hops off her chair, grimaces and grins. She's fun and friendly while discussing her role as Mrs Which, one of the three Mrs' (Mrs Who is played by Mindy Kaling, and Mrs Whatsit by Reese Witherspoon), celestial beings from another dimension who guide the young heroine, Meg (Storm Reid), on her quest to rescue her father (Chris Pine).
