Dior has unveiled an update on its La D de Dior jewel watch, a beloved classic that was launched in 2003. For its 20th anniversary, the timepiece’s elegant silhouette now comes hand-engraved with the brand’s iconic Cannage graphic pattern, which has long been associated with the Lady Dior bag.
THE ICONIC CANNAGE
The design motif first appeared at the maison in 1947, when Monsieur Christian Dior presented the New Look show. However, its appearance was subtle, as it featured on the Napoleon III chairs that accommodated the well-heeled guests. These chairs have since become part of the maison, and can be seen at Dior boutiques across the world.
Meanwhile, the Cannage motif has become equally ubiquitous, proving to be inspiration for the many designers who’ve passed through the hallowed halls of the maison. It has been reinterpreted in various forms in the ready-to-wear, haute couture and even accessories collections.
It’s no surprise, then, that it appears once again – this time to celebrate the milestone anniversary of the La D de Dior jewel watch.
JOURNEY THROUGH TIME
In recent years, Dior’s timepieces have been gaining traction among watch collectors. The brand launched its first watches back in 1986, and acquired a Swiss manufacture in 2001 to take its horological ambitions to the next level. Unlike many fashion brands of that era, it was not content with simply licensing and slapping its logo on the dial of basic watches – instead, it approached the design of its timepieces in the same way it did for its ready-to-wear and haute couture collections.
