…you could learn from your baby. He’s an expert on the subject already
At no stage in your life do you learn as much or as quickly as when you become a mum. Change a nappy in seconds? Check. Whip up tea with one hand? Check. Queen of multi-tasking? Check. But there’s something else that your baby can teach you about, something far more life-affirming: love. “For a lot of people, love is something we don’t really understand until we have children,” says clinical child psychologist Oliver James. “But anyone who has ever become a parent knows that feeling of suddenly having a real sense of purpose to your life. Having a baby can cut through all the status-orientated or material things of adult life, all the things we think we value, to something far more profound.”
Although he may only be tiny, from the first moment your baby locks eyes with you, he’s teaching you about love. “It’s impossible to ignore the candour of the eye contact your baby gives you,” says Oliver. “It’s not mediated by any kind of deception or ulterior motive and is such a refreshing change from our usual adult relationships.” So cast aside what you think you know about love and let’s find out what our babies can teach us.
Love can be unselfish
