MOLLY MELDRUM'S SON ‘I'M DESPERATE TO SEE DAD'

During his school days, Morgan Scholes often got teased about his famous father. If he was winning an argument, chances were a classmate would turn around and try to unnerve him by asking: “How can Molly Meldrum be your dad? Everyone knows he’s gay!”

Growing up in Molly’s crazy world did have some downsides. But the good times – like a banjo lesson from Sir Paul McCartney – far outweighed the bad for Molly’s adopted son.

“I’ve only come to fully appreciate it later in life,” Morgan, whose late mother was close friends with Molly, tells New Idea. “There was always something interesting going on at Molly’s place and it broadened my mind, opened me up to possibilities.

“There was a time that Dad apologised to me, said he knew I’d had it pretty tough growing up because he was gay. But I told him I’d never seen it as an issue. It was just normal for me, not strange or unique at all. I never thought it was a big deal.”

Morgan was just a toddler when his single mum, Jan Pickett, started struggling to cope. Big-hearted Molly – who was only a child when his own mother was hospitalised for mental illness – stepped in to help. From then on, he became the little boy’s de facto father.
