Greying hair, wrinkles, weight gain, several bouts with cancer, voice loss and threatened blindness.

Seventies pop sensation Mark Holden – also known as ‘The Carnation Kid’ for the flowers he handed out to adoring fans – has survived them all, but reckons ‘growing old is not for sissies’.

Today, the wacky former Australian Idol judge claims he will never appear on television again, but encroaching age is not the only reason.

His bizarre performance as Bobo the Clown on Dancing With The Stars, which sent social media into meltdown with ‘a deluge of hate’, also played its part.

‘It’s probably best that I never appear on TV again, and I think that’s more than likely to happen,’ reflects Mark, who reluctantly turns 63 this week.

‘Bobo was probably the exclamation mark at the end of my TV career and that was more or less definite. So be it. I had a wonderful shot at it.

‘Hopefully something else might turn up before I dance off into dementia,’ laughs the outspoken singer, songwriter, actor and record producer, who is now working as a barrister after finishing the law degree he ditched in his 20s.
