Every innovative solution starts with a problem. For Sub-Zero founder Westye Bakke in the 1930s, the challenge was to find a storage solution for his diabetic son’s insulin and medication. Bakke’s experimentation with refrigeration eventually led to building his own freestanding freezer out of metal scraps. In 1945, Bakke founded the Sub-Zero Freezer Company, pioneering the first system for preserving food at low temperatures. Bakke’s invention was a commercial success—and soon after, SubZero established a reputation for quality and innovation.
