The Himalayas are fast turning into a garbage dump due to an increase in tourism but a dedicated group is toiling to preserve them.
Waste Warriors Society, a registered NGO with waste management projects in Dharamsala, Dehradun and around the Corbett Tiger Reserve has been doing some noteworthy work which can be scaled up with financial support.
The NGO has collected and processed 4223 tonnes of waste since they began work in August 2012 and currently provides employment to over 60 people, many of who are waste workers from the poorest sectors of society. They run door-to-door waste collections, do national event waste management, educational programs for schools, training, workshops & awareness raising, community clean-up drives, and maintain the cleanliness of public spaces, hiking trails, commercial and residential localities. All essential activities, if India is to one day become clean.
