If you are an avid news buff you would have definitely come across terms like Left wing and Right wing politicians, supporters, ideology, etc. But do you know from where these terms originated and what are their ideologies? In today's politics, the terms left-wing and right wing are normally used for liberals and conservatives. But they were originally coined by politicians during the French Revolution. In the late 17th century, the members of the French National Assembly assembled for drafting their Constitution. They were debating about how much authority King Louis XVI should have.
As the debate raged, the anti-royalist revolutionaries gathered to the presiding officer's left. And the conservative, aristocratic supporters gathered to the right. Soon, the newspapers began making references to the progressive left and the traditionalist right of the French National Assembly. Soon, these terms from France spread to other countries and are now commonly used by the political parties of varying ideologies.
