Expats who arrive In Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding areas may find it difficult to get a real bead on the local arts scene. This doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist; in fact, Kuala Lumpur is booming with tremendous local talent in several areas of the performing arts industry. The blend of different races and cultures in the country has led to several unique forms of dance, art, and music. Influence from other countries adds to the mix of innovative and evolving young talent. The chance to experience the arts and culture scene however, is not that easy as there isn’t exactly a central hub or go-to place in KL for theatre, dance, and art such as Broadway in New York or even George Town in Penang.
The upcoming Kuala Lumpur International Arts Festival (KLIAF 2017) is one great way to get a good sense of the local arts scene. There will be a number of performances held around Kuala Lumpur (not just the city centre but also the suburbs surrounding it), catered to a diverse audience.
First launched in 2015, the event is building a reputation as a major international celebration of the arts. Festival performances are also complemented by educational workshops and activities. KLIAF 2017 will feature more than 50 music, dance, theatre, visual arts, and literature events in over 12 venues in and around the city.
