THERE ARE FEW mountain experiences more extraordinary than being above the clouds. If you’ve stood on an island summit with clouds lapping below like waves on a rocky shore, chances are high you’ll long to stand above them again.
So it is with me. After my first unplanned above-the-clouds experience 30 years ago I’ve become a near-obsessive cloud inversion chaser. If even a small possibility exists that a cloud sea has formed you’ll find me dashing up the nearest hill. There have been many failed ‘chases’, where promising valley fog has smothered summits too, but they haven’t lessened the obsession. If anything, they’ve fueled it. The rareness of cloud seas makes them all the more precious.
