You might have heard about omtanke, and it seems the Scandinavians have done it again when it comes to healthy habits. This Swedish word translates to care and consideration for others, and a growing body of evidence suggests that being someone who cares – in ways like volunteering – can be beneficial to health. Positive outcomes include reduced stress, increased happiness and increased social connectedness. A 2013 systematic review published in BMC Public Health, wfor example, analysed 29 papers and found that volunteering had favourable effects on depression, life satisfaction and well-being. Care-giving may even help you live longer: a 2015 report published in describes five population-based studies, which show that caregivers had significantly reduced mortality rates compared to non-care-giving groups.

Caring with benefits

Melbourne-based Amanda Turnbull first experienced the benefits of caring 53 years ago. She was feeling hopeless and helpless after a friend took his own life, and started volunteering at a crisis accommodation centre for people who were homeless or escaping violence.

“I loved it and it did wonders for not feeling so helpless,” says the 36-year-old content producer. “Just the simple act of sitting down for a shared meal and talking to people – it did as much for me as I think I did for them.”
