I was more than a bit stunned last month when our long forgotten manager Lou Macari entered my life again making some unexplained exaggerations about my fitness when I was goalkeeper during his time at the club.
The Scotsman - who loves a bet or ten - told listeners of Moore Than Just a Podcast that I couldn’t train because I had dodgy knees but what he didn’t explain was that I always did the goalkeeping routines.
His entire regime was built on running he was crazy for it. But with knees like mine, that was not a good idea so I concentrated on the goalkeeping routines in order not to mess myself up for match day.
Why he would want to get into that stuff is beyond me but he is certainly not the most popular manager we ever had at West Ham.
We never got on from the moment he arrived and told us all that he was going to make us different players but he had the wrong attitude and we never got on.
He once saw me having a beer and as a teetotaller, told me that was wrong and set entirely the wrong impression for the younger players.
