A season-long audition
Dolphin Digest|January 2020
The Dolphins’ quest to find players who could help the organization moving forward began early in 2019 and never stopped even as 2020 approached
A season-long audition

In this wildest of the Dolphins seasons, it probably was the wildest 10-day stretch.

Shoot, it was the wildest 10-day stretch in recent memory, a week and a half when the Dolphins bounced players on and off the active roster like there was no tomorrow.

In those nine days, from Dec. 2-10, the Dolphins acquired nine players; they put three players on injured reserve; and waived seven players.

One player both came and went during that time, as running back Zach Zenner was claimed off waivers from the Arizona Cardinals on Dec. 3 and was waived exactly one week later after getting playing time on special teams in the Dec. 8 game against the Jets.

Yes, this was a crazy time for the Dolphins. But there was a purpose behind all the moves, and it wasn’t simply to keep the salary-cap folks busy.

Like they have all season, the Dolphins are on the lookout for young players who could wind up helping them beyond this season.

This is the hope for all those late-season acquisitions, players like Trevor Davis or Mack Hollins or Evan Brown or Zach Sieler or Linden Stephens or Adam Pankey or Jamal Davis or Nate Brooks.

Now, the likelihood is that one or more of those players will have come and gone between the time Dolphin Digest goes to press and the time you read this, but there’s also a chance — however remote — that one or more of the guys in the previous paragraph will turn out to be players.
