I think it’s important to state, from the off, the term ‘clean eating’ by it’s premise, is a good one and a smart approach! – Enjoying fresh whole foods in their most natural state, and limiting those heavily processed and refined – that simple. This will subsequently be reflected in body, skin, health and energy levels. Who wouldn’t benefit from eating more of these foods?!
In the first instance, this is a great start for the general population and kick starting any health improvement quest.
However…
The growing ‘trend’ which has been glamorised by celebrities and the pretentiousness of those who preach ‘clean eating’ and act morally superior by somehow justifying food binges as ‘earned’ cheat meals, following a severe state of deprivation is also important to address.
The most important variable in any weight/fat loss pursuit is…… ENERGY BALANCE (calories in vs. calories out). It is often missed out yet crucial to success!
Severe restriction and the consequential restriction-less, gluttony-fest will not serve you with any long-term solution for mental or physical health. It is, in fact, a recipe for disordered eating patterns, long-term unhealthy relationships with food, and in extreme instances, an eating disorder.
“Cause I gotta have faith, faith, faith”
Allusions to purity, goodness, simplicity, close to evangelism and far less about physical health and more moral superiority. In reference to ‘clean eating’ you may of heard it penned as:
“Religion to atheists”
NOTE: Religion will be a ‘no-go’ within the context of this article.... can’t kinda help but see the comparative nature though, right?? I digress...
People want to be good. People want to be seen as good. I think those innate traits are deeply engrained in all of us. It gives people identity... purpose... A sense of belonging, as a basic human need.
