Art should always try to reflect the times that we are living in. But what happens when the vision you have conjured up of where we are heading starts to feel all too familiar, all too quickly?
This is where Zak Pinchin found himself as he noticed that the initial world-building blueprint that he had laid out for Modern Error's debut full-length at the start of 2019 started to bleed into our reality as 2020 reared its ugly head.
The original concept of the record was all about being disconnected from the world and focusing on your social isolation. The idea of falling into a broken heart syndrome because of that disconnection and then struggling to adapt because no one knows your past.
It was more symbolic than anything, he says, but then COVID happened, and I literally couldn't see anyone. I was in the middle of writing the lyrics, and then I was in the middle of this position that nobody saw coming. It felt like the world was in disarray.
It may not have been the environment that Zak had envisioned for stretching his creative muscles, but with his ultimate goal for Modern Error to serve as an encapsulation of itself, the intense incubation that a world gripped by fear, confusion and doubt provided helped make something truly phenomenal.
That is 'Victim Of A Modern Age', a record of two distinct, decadent and destructive halves, known as 'Ouvres'. The first pushes the limits of euphoria, filling the soul with all of the light and energy it can possibly handle via the most melodic, soaring, and arena-ready compositions possible. Whilst the second forces you to question those feelings conjured by the first, delving into uncomfortable electronics and digital interfaces that bridge the gap between technology and humanity. It's a deep, all-consuming audio experience that is as gripping as it is gorgeous.
