The emergence of Sasikala’s nephew Dhinakaran as a possible alternative further roils the AIADMK
On July 20, the ruling AIADMK urged the Election Commission of India to set aside the breakaway Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) founder T.T.V. Dhinakaran’s victory in the RK Nagar assembly by poll. The party alleged that he had bribed voters to win the constituency, which was earlier represented by the late chief minister J. Jayalalithaa.
The AIADMK’s official mouthpiece, Namadhu Amma, even claimed that voters had targeted Dhinakaran’s convoy because he had failed to hand out the money he had promised as ‘token’ during electioneering. Indeed, in RK Nagar to distribute sewing machines on July 18, the AMMK leader’s vehicles were stoned, forcing the police to intervene. The leader, though, insists the protesters were supporters of losing candidate, the AIADMK presidium chairman and former minister Madhusudanan.
