Meet M Suneel, corporator of ward no. 10 (Vidyaranyapuram), who believes, unlike many of his ilk, that charity begins at home. He has a vision for his city – that it gets ahead in the race for the tag of ‘cleanest city’, and has made it his mission to see that Mysuru’s case is strengthened from the bottom up!
For this semi sarkaaribabu his ward is his home and he is determined to keep it clean, even it means using his own hands to do so! He has no hang ups whatsoever in personally sprucing up his ward’s streets. His down to earth attitude, has also made him new friends and brought him new admirers – the pourakarmikas whose duty it is to keep the ward spick and span.
Pourakarmika Gurunath who works in ward no. 10 said, “It is really good to see our corporator leading us from the front. I have not seen any corporator taking a broom stick in his hand and cleaning up his ward. When the corporator himself holds the broom stick, it really motivates us to do more work”.

The Cauvery dilemma
Both north and south Karnataka are in a tizzy over water. North Karnataka over the utilisation of waters of the Mahadayi River (see article on Page 24) and South Karnataka over the utilization of the Cauvery River. This is probably the result of a skewed discourse which is framed by the limited terms of water availability. It’s an I win you lose kind of discourse - water allocated to one state is the loss of another, and the water that reaches the sea is a waste. Is there a way to deal with these disputes other than the legal? Prabhu Mallikarjunan traces the history and outcome of the dispute and puts forth the farmer’s perspective.
