An environmentalist, an ardent follower of Gandhian principles, a firm believer of ‘Ecology is permanent economy’, Sunderlal Bahuguna dedicated his life towards just one goal. And that was to save the environment and take the necessary steps to improve the condition of the people living in the area.
Sunderlal Bahuguna was born in a village near Tehri, Uttarakhand on January 9, 1927, British-occupied India. Before becoming an eco-activist—a person who works to eliminate ecological problems by protesting against the system that is the cause of the problem, he spent his life educating Indian villagers, and working to undo ecological damage in the Himalayan Mountains. Mr Bahuguna was an initiator for the Chipko Movement, and led the anti-Tehri Dam crusade. As a person who followed the teachings of the Father of the Nation, he protested peacefully to reach and achieve his goals.

Sunderlal’s family was a wealthy family, but he observed his mother spend nearly 20 hours to finish the household work considered fit only for women. His sensitivities and sensibilities helped him understand the situation of the Indian women better and watching his mother toil away proved to be influential in his efforts to help the common Indian woman. His political career began at the mere age of 13. He was influenced by his friend, Sridev Suman, who was at the time a nationalist protestor. His career continued till his marriage in 1956. He married Vimla on one condition—that they would live in a rural setting and start an ashram there.
