ON the very first day of 2018 Gillingham created a little bit of history – cementing a turnaround in fortunes spearheaded by new boss Steve Lovell.
On New Year’s Day, the Gills beat rivals Charlton 2-1 at the Valley to claim the club’s first-ever win at the London ground at the 16th attempt.
The victory capped a remarkable recovery since previous manager Ady Pennock left Priestfield by mutual consent at the end of September, when the club languished 22nd in the division.
Lovell, previously a first-team coach at the club, was initially made caretaker manager following Peter Taylor’s short stint in the role, before being handed the reins until the end of the season.
That was after winning four and drawing two of his first seven games in charge.
The Gills had risen to 15th in the table ahead of the weekend and 31-year-old Zakuani – signed from Northampton in the summer – is clear on the reasons for the turnaround.
