Basham's Dismissal Has Ryan Baffled

No.8 Basham was dismissed by referee Marius Mitrea for a tip-tackle on replacement back Gareth Simpson on 18 minutes.

But without access to a Television Match Official at Sixways, Ryan felt Mitrea should not have given Basham his marching orders.

“It wasn’t a red card,” Ryan said. “It was a rugby incident that can be dealt with by a penalty or at worse a yellow card.

“He kept saying he has not got a TMO so why is he jumping to give a red when he hasn’t got a TMO to confirm?

“It was nowhere near a full tip and with no TMO to reinforce that I just don’t understand it.”

However Ryan was “proud” of the reaction of his players as Luke Baldwin struck late to secure a losing bonus point that keeps Dragons top of Pool 1.

“That’s an incredible shift for effectively 70 minutes,” Ryan said.
